Sexism in the workplace

SEXISM IN THE WORKPLACE

Sexism is pervasive and complex. We experience it daily in different forms, and sometimes it's difficult to identify, defend against, or react to in the moment. The hardest part can also be making certain people understand or realize that their remarks, gestures, or behaviors are hurtful, inappropriate, and sexist! For example, how do you explain to a colleague that you're not flattered when they comment on your outfit?

Here are some sexist attacks (too) often heard in the workplace, and, most importantly, ideas for comebacks so you don't have to put up with it anymore!

Attack: "The general manager is really a castrator."

→ Would they have said that about a man? No.

If that's not enough of an argument, here's another: Women are often demonized for actions that would have been praised if a man had done them.

→ Comeback idea: "Does a woman in power make you anxious? Perhaps you should explore that with your therapist..."

Attack: During a job interview: "Do you plan to have children?"

→ It is illegal to ask this question during a job interview according to article L1221-6 of the Labor Code. Here is an interesting article from Rockie Mag on the subject, with good advice on how to answer this question without risking your career.

→ Comeback idea: "Yes, I plan to have a good dozen triplets, but we should have lost touch by then!"
